Scanner
(Index)
A scanner is a device that converts a graphical piece of art to an electronic picture.
These are the instructions for using the scanner with a Macintosh.
The scanner itself is actually quite simple. There are only a few parts that you really interact with.
- Power button - This turns the scanner on and off. It's located on the left side of the front. The scanner is on when the power button is in the depressed position.
- Action button - This launches Image Capture and scans an overview for you. It is located front and center on the top, and has a little light in the button.
- Overview - This is a term used to describe a quick preview of the entire scanner bed. The action button scans an overview for you, and there is also a button at the bottom of the Image Capture window that says "overview" that will do the same.
- Scanner bed - This is the glass plate that you put your documents on. Because the lamp is below the scanner bed, you place your documents face down.
- Scanner cover - This is a hinged cover that covers the scanner bed and is white on the inside. It's purpose is to stop light and reflect it back to the scanner's light sensors. If the scanner cover is not down when you scan, images will appear dark.
- The lamp - The lamp is a bright fluorescent bulb. It travels back and forth with the scanner's light sensors as an image is scanned. The scanner needs to heat up the lamp before it can be used, so the first overview in a few hours could take as long as 15 seconds.
