Design-time Markings in InDesign
(Index)
InDesign has a variety of markings that it can display during designing your page for helping you line things up.
All of these markings can be shown or hidden in the View menu. Also in the View menu are the commands for turning on and off snapping objects to guides, the document grid and the baseline grid, which are used for alignment. When snapping to them is turned on, the edges of objects will snap to the alignment lines when you move the objects within a few pixels of them.
- Guides - Horizontal and vertical lines that you can make in any place at any time.
- Document Grid - Lots and lots of squares. Very nice for lining things up.
- Baseline Grid - Shows where each row of text should be if keylined. The baseline grid is set for 12 point font by default.
- Frame Edges - Shows you the edges of all frames.
- Text Threads - Connects text boxes with a light blue line to show how your text continuations are arranged.
- Rulers - Shows you the rulers on the side of the page. The rulers match up to what will actually get printed.
