Feather in InDesign

(Index)

Feather is used to soften the edges of the contents of a frame.

You could almost say that it's a gradient from a picture to transparent, however InDesign's gradient tool is not capable of creating a gradient involving transparencies.

To apply a feather to a a frame:

  1. Select the arrow tool .
  2. Select the object you would like to feather.
  3. In the menus, select Object -> Feather.
  4. When the window comes up, check the box that says "Feather".
  5. Specify the feather width. This is the distance from the edge in that the feather will be applied. If the preview box is checked, then pressing tab after typing in a new feather width will refresh the preview.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Done!
