Layers in InDesign

(Index)

All of your layout magic is done on layers inside your InDesign document. By default, there is only one layer.

Basically, when you look at your document, you are seeing the top layer. If there are any parts that are at all transparent, then you see the next layer down, and so on, all the way to the last layer. If you can "see through" all the layers, then that area of the page will appear white.

The Layers palette shows all of the layers you have in your document. The ones at the top of the list are on the top of the document, and the ones at the bottom of the list are at the bottom of the document.
