File Sharing

(Index)

File Sharing is the process of transferring a file or folder from one computer to another. There are two basic methods: First, use a removable disk, and second, use the network.

File Sharing using a removable disk

  1. Insert a disk into the computer.
  2. Copy the file or folder to the disk.
  3. Eject the removable disk.
  4. Move the disk to the destination computer.
  5. Insert a disk into the destination computer.
  6. Open a new Finder window, and select the removable disk.
  7. Find the file you copied to the removable disk, and copy it to the desktop (or whatever location you prefer).
  8. Eject the removable disk.
  9. Done!

File Sharing using the network

Note: The source and destination computers must be on the same network for this to work. For example, Newspaper's G5s and Journalism's iBooks cannot share files this way because they are not on the same network.

Another Note: There are TWO networks for the laptops. If you cannot find the computer you're looking for, try switching networks.

  1. Connect to the other computer.
  2. To access the other computer, click on the icon that just appeared on the left side of the window. This is why you mount volumes with names similar to the computer's name. If you have a whole bunch of icons each with the same name (slcsuser, for example) floating around your desktop, it's hard to tell which one is which. "Newspaper-1 HD", "Newspaper-2 HD"... is more meaningful.
  3. You are now free to browse the other computer's hard drive. The location of the other computer's desktop is 'Users/slcsuser/Desktop'.
  4. Don't forget to eject the drive when you're done.
  5. Done!
